About Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) was a French painter whose work brought the classical tradition into the nineteenth century. He trained with Jacques-Louis David and won the Prix de Rome in 1801. His years in Italy deepened his interest in Renaissance painting and ancient art; he later directed the French Academy in Rome.

Ingres placed particular importance on line and drawing. His portraits combine carefully described faces and hands with close attention to clothing and furnishings. Although he also pursued ambitious historical subjects, portraiture became an enduring part of his reputation.

Old Town Magick’s selection includes his 1823 portrait of Madame Jacques-Louis Leblanc. The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies it as one of a pair portraying the sitter and her husband. Black clothing, rich fabrics and gold chains give the composition its distinctive character.
