The Meaning of Salt

Salt has long been a symbol of purification, preservation, protection, and sacred ritual. Across countless cultures and traditions, it has been used not only as a practical necessity, but as a spiritual substance believed to cleanse spaces, ward against corruption, and create protective boundaries between worlds.

At its core, salt symbolises purity and permanence. It preserves what would otherwise decay, giving it ancient associations with endurance, loyalty, and the safeguarding of life. Because of this, salt frequently appears in rituals of blessing, hospitality, mourning, and spiritual cleansing.

Salt is also closely linked to thresholds and protection. In folklore and ceremonial practice, it was scattered across doorways, carried in pockets, or placed around spaces to repel negativity and unwanted influence. This gives it symbolic ties to discernment, grounding, and energetic defence.

Despite its simplicity, salt carries profound symbolic weight — representing the essential, the incorruptible, and the sacred balance between earth, sea, body, and spirit.
